The Big Picture

Wall Street closed out April in record-breaking fashion. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted all-time closing highs on Friday, capping their strongest monthly performances since 2020. Despite an ongoing war in the Middle East, a cautious Fed, and elevated oil prices, the market proved remarkably resilient, powered by a blowout earnings season and growing optimism that a peace deal with Iran may be taking shape.

Index Performance

For the week, the S&P 500 rose 0.9% to finish at 7,230, the Nasdaq added 1.1% to close at 25,114, and the Dow gained 0.6% to 49,499. For the month of April, the S&P 500 surged more than 9%, the Nasdaq soared over 15%, and the Dow gained more than 6%, its best month since November 2024. All three major indexes are now trading well above where they began 2026, having fully erased the losses from the initial shock of the Iran war.

Magnificent Seven Earnings

The week delivered the most important earnings reports of the season. Alphabet smashed Q1 estimates with $109.9 billion in revenue, with Google Cloud surging 63% year over year past $20 billion for the first time. Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft all topped expectations on both the top and bottom lines. The market reaction was mixed, however, with Meta and Microsoft closing sharply lower despite the beats, reflecting an elevated bar for expectations and investor anxiety over surging AI capital expenditure guidance and whether that spending will translate into stronger profits down the road.

Apple saved the week on Friday, climbing more than 3% after posting its best-ever March quarter, with strong iPhone sales and a robust performance in China. Revenue guidance for the current quarter also came in ahead of forecasts. Energy supermajors Exxon Mobil and Chevron both exceeded profit expectations, though their shares were muted as Iran submitted a new peace proposal through Pakistani mediators, reviving hopes for a resumption of Gulf oil exports.

Broader Earnings Picture

The Q1 earnings season is tracking exceptionally well. With 63% of S&P 500 companies having reported, 84% have topped analyst expectations, and blended earnings growth stands at 15.1%. Net profit margins hit 13.4%, the highest on record. Analysts are now projecting full-year 2026 earnings growth of 18.6% for the index.

Economic Data

The week brought a mixed but broadly supportive read on the economy. First-quarter GDP confirmed that AI investment helped carry growth in Q1, offsetting signs of slowing private consumption. The PCE price index showed inflation remains sticky, consistent with the Fed's decision to hold rates steady at 3.5% to 3.75%. Jerome Powell's press conference reinforced a patient, data-dependent stance, with traders pricing in zero cuts for the foreseeable future. The FOMC meeting marks what may be Powell's second-to-last as chair, with Kevin Warsh's confirmation process now advancing after the DOJ dropped its probe into Powell.

Oil and Geopolitics

Oil prices pulled back meaningfully through the week, with WTI crude falling toward $94-$103/barrel as Iran submitted a new peace proposal to U.S. negotiators via Pakistani mediators. The prospect of an eventual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is increasingly being priced into energy markets, offering some relief on the inflation front.

Notable Movers

Coca-Cola gained nearly 4% after posting a strong earnings beat. General Motors surged more than 4% after topping Q1 estimates and raising its full-year guidance. FICO continued to slide following last week's regulatory announcement stripping it of its mortgage monopoly. OpenAI rattled AI sentiment midweek after a Wall Street Journal report revealed revenue and user growth were tracking below internal targets, with the CFO raising concerns about the company's ability to fund computing contracts.

The Calendar

Monday brings Factory Orders data along with Palantir earnings after the bell. Tuesday features JOLTS job openings and ISM Services PMI, with AMD, Pfizer, PayPal, and Shopify reporting. Wednesday brings ADP employment data along with Disney, Uber, Arm Holdings, DoorDash, and Novo Nordisk. Thursday delivers McDonald's, Coinbase, and Airbnb earnings. Friday is the biggest macro day of the week, with the April Nonfarm Payrolls report, the unemployment rate, and Average Hourly Earnings all hitting before the open. A heavy roster of Fed speakers is scheduled throughout the week, including John Williams, Michelle Bowman, Austan Goolsbee, Alberto Musalem, and Christopher Waller.

Key Themes to Watch

The April jobs report. Friday's payrolls print will be the most important data point of the week. Economists are expecting around 49,000 jobs added and the unemployment rate to hold at 4.3%, a sharp slowdown from March's blowout 178,000 figure. A soft number could reignite rate cut hopes; a strong one would cement the Fed's higher-for-longer posture.

AI earnings under the microscope. Palantir on Monday and AMD on Tuesday are the two most anticipated tech reports. Palantir's AI Platform momentum and government contract growth will be closely watched after its stock pulled back roughly 20% in 2026. AMD's data center results will serve as a critical read on whether AI chip demand beyond Nvidia remains robust, especially following Intel's surprise surge last week.

Disney's first report under new CEO Josh D'Amaro. Wall Street won't just be watching the financials. Investors will be assessing whether the new chief signals any strategic shift, particularly around streaming profitability, theme parks, and the company's AI and content roadmap.

Fed speakers in full force. With Powell potentially in his final weeks as chair, commentary from multiple Fed governors this week will be parsed carefully for any shift in tone on inflation, growth, or the rate path.

Iran peace developments. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain active but fragile heading into the week. Iran submitted a 14-point peace proposal to U.S. negotiators via Pakistani mediators on Thursday, and as of Sunday the U.S. had conveyed its response with Iran now reviewing it. The back-and-forth has been rocky: Trump said over the weekend he "can't imagine" the Iranian proposal would be acceptable and that Tehran "has not paid a big enough price," though he softened slightly on Sunday, saying his representatives are having "very positive discussions." Adding a new wrinkl, Trump announced "Project Freedom" on Sunday, a U.S. military-escorted effort to begin guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, involving guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members. Iran called the move a ceasefire violation and a senior Iranian military official warned that renewed conflict is "possible." With gas prices now averaging $4.45 a gallon nationally, nearly 50% above pre-war levels, and the Strait still effectively closed to commercial traffic, any breakthrough or breakdown in talks this week could move oil prices sharply, with immediate ripple effects across equities, bonds, and inflation expectations.

Bottom line: The market heads into May at all-time highs, riding the strongest monthly rally in years. The next test is whether the economy, earnings, and geopolitics can keep pace. Jobs on Friday and AI results early in the week will set the tone. With sentiment improving and peace talks advancing, the bull case is building, but with oil still elevated and the Fed on hold, this rally will need to keep earning it.
