But the optimism that carried stocks into the long weekend was already being tested by the time markets reopened: by Saturday, Iran had declared the strait closed again, a reminder that this conflict's resolution remains fragile and far from settled.

Gas prices fell below $4 a gallon nationally for the first time since March, settling near $3.999, though still more than 34% above pre-war levels. Energy stocks dropped sharply, with Devon Energy, APA, Marathon Petroleum, and the major integrated oil companies all falling 2.5% to 4%, while travel and leisure names rallied: United Airlines, Delta, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival all gained on hopes for a normalizing energy backdrop and resumed international travel.

But the reopening proved more contested than the headlines suggested. Then on Saturday, June 20, Iran's military command declared the strait closed again, citing Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon as a violation of the truce framework. The U.S. immediately disputed the claim, with CENTCOM stating that "Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz" and that commercial traffic continued to flow. Vice President JD Vance said a record 16 million barrels of oil had exited the strait on Friday, even as Iran prepared its closure announcement.
