The S&amp;P 500 closed the week at 7,718.60, a change of roughly 0.1 percent, with the Nasdaq Composite at 26,506.99 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 53,414.25, according to weekly index data compiled by Stock Rover as of September 4, 2026.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">If you looked only at those numbers, you would conclude that nothing happened. Quite a lot happened. Oil spiked on renewed Middle East hostilities, yields climbed to multiyear highs, a Federal Reserve governor sounded a patient note midweek, and Friday's jobs report undid the calm. The week was less a straight line than a round trip.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;margin-top:0.25in;margin-bottom:7pt;" class=""><strong>The jobs report that changed the conversation</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">On Friday morning, the Labor Department reported that the economy added 162,000 jobs in August, well above consensus expectations near 55,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent, and July's previously negative reading was revised into positive territory, according to a September 4 market update from Charles Schwab.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Two days earlier, ADP had reported private employers adding only 38,000 jobs. Two credible reports, pointing in opposite directions, in the same week. That is worth remembering the next time a single data point is described as decisive.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Here is the part that tends to surprise people. Stocks fell on the strong report. On Friday the Dow declined 0.51 percent, the S&amp;P 500 lost 0.38 percent and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.29 percent, as reported by CNBC.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Why would good news push stock prices lower? Because a healthy labor market gives the Federal Reserve room to keep policy restrictive without worrying as much about damaging employment. With inflation still above the Fed's stated 2 percent objective and energy costs rising, that room matters. Following the report, federal funds futures priced the probability of a quarter point rate increase at the September meeting at approximately 58 percent, up from roughly 49 percent a day earlier, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool as cited by CNBC.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;margin-top:0.25in;margin-bottom:7pt;" class=""><strong>The real story was in the bond market</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">The 10 year Treasury yield touched an intraday high of 4.818 percent on Wednesday, a level not seen since November 2023, and finished the week near 4.77 percent, according to CNBC. The 2 year yield, which is more sensitive to imminent policy changes, reached its highest level since January 2025. The 30 year closed the week near 5.24 percent.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Yields are the quiet plumbing of a financial plan. They influence what a conservative portfolio can reasonably earn, what a mortgage costs, and how the market values companies whose profits sit far in the future. When yields move this much this quickly, equity volatility often follows, which is roughly what the past two weeks have looked like.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;margin-top:0.25in;margin-bottom:7pt;" class=""><strong>Energy and geopolitics</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Crude oil rose approximately 9.5 percent over the week to close at 91.31, per Stock Rover's September 4 commodity summary. Brent crude traded near 97 dollars a barrel on Monday, approaching its highest level since late July, according to reporting from Al Jazeera and CNBC on September 7 and 8.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">The pressure point is the Strait of Hormuz, which in normal conditions carries roughly one fifth of global oil supply. Hostilities between the United States and Iran escalated over the weekend, including reciprocal strikes involving commercial vessels, and Tehran signaled a restricted maritime zone in parts of the Persian Gulf. Trading Economics reported on September 7 that the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen below 290 million barrels, its lowest level since 1982. Goldman Sachs raised its December 2026 Brent forecast by 5 dollars to 85 dollars a barrel, as reported by CNBC on September 8, noting that markets are increasingly pricing a prolonged conflict.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">Energy matters here for one reason above all others. It feeds inflation, and inflation is what the Fed is responding to. That is the thread connecting a shipping lane in the Persian Gulf to the interest rate on a mortgage in Palm Beach County.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;margin-top:0.25in;margin-bottom:7pt;" class=""><strong>What we are watching this week</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:125%;margin-bottom:8pt;" class="">US markets were closed Monday, September 7 for Labor Day, which makes this a four day week carrying two consequential releases.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;line-height:120%;margin-bottom:6pt;" class=""><strong>Thursday, September 10.</strong>&nbsp;
